৳5,000 on a course, or learn for free? What the money actually buys
You need: Free courses (YouTube, Coursera, edX, freeCodeCamp), an AI chat such as Gemini or ChatGPT
Almost everything a ৳5,000 course teaches is free somewhere: on YouTube, freeCodeCamp, or the free audit option on Coursera and edX. So the real question is not where to find the content. It is what the money buys.
What ৳5,000 buys
At most four things:
- A deadline, so you finish.
- Someone who checks your work and tells you what is wrong.
- A certificate.
- People: batchmates, a mentor, maybe a job contact.
If you already have the one you need, don’t pay.
Why the deadline matters
Few people finish free courses. Across 221 free online courses, the median completion rate was 12.6%. In edX’s first course, more than 155,000 people signed up and fewer than 5% finished. Paying helps some people finish, but MIT researchers found that price is not the only thing that keeps learners going.
The two-week test
Before you pay, learn the same topic for free for two weeks: one free course, a little every day. Then try a small task on your own, without looking things up.
- You did it. Free is enough. Keep going.
- You stopped halfway, twice. You need a deadline. Pay.
- You did it, but you can’t tell if it’s right. You need someone to check. Try an AI tutor first: ask it to test you and explain your mistakes (how to set it up).
- 1A free check: the AI points out the mistake and explains it
An AI can be wrong too, so for work that decides a job or a grade, a real person’s review is still worth money.
When ৳5,000 is worth it
- A job you want names that exact certificate in its posting.
- The course has graded work reviewed by a real person.
- You failed the two-week test twice on your own.
A portfolio of two or three things you built gets you further than a certificate alone, so pick a course that ends with real work.
